I’ve had trouble sleeping for as long as I can remember. From my very earliest recollections, I seem to see myself standing up in my crib, looking at the light coming through the partially-opened door of my bedroom, hearing cheerful, but unintelligible voices, and wishing I could be a part of whatever activity was occurring on the other side of that door.
At the age of six or seven, and the oldest of five children, I remember standing at my bedroom window, after being put to bed and kissed goodnight. I recall looking out into the side yard, where the summer sun was still shining, and seeing my parents and another couple playing badminton. It was only seven-thirty or so, and I felt indignant at being made to go to bed early, with my younger siblings. I now realize that my mother rarely had moments like that with other adults, with all the cooking, and cleaning, and other household tasks, that raising five children under the age of seven required! (She probably felt undeservedly guilty, too.)
Well, my resistance to sleep has stubbornly persisted throughout my life. In college, I had to try to register for classes that started at 10 or later, and I pulled countless “all-nighters.”
Later, during my working life, I was always rushing to work in the mornings, and struggling to fall asleep before 2 or 3 am, night after night. On some occasions, I couldn’t sleep at all, and sometimes, even had to call in sick.
I still persist at trying to go to bed at a reasonable hour—I really do! But, my usual night involves waking up every hour or so, from midnight on.
My current routine is to sleep for 4 fitful hours at night, then, I get up, to keep from disturbing my husband (who has to get up for work at 3:30 am, Monday through Friday). Sometime after he leaves for work at 4:30 am, I try to lie down again. But, another 3-4 fitful hours is usually all I can manage. Then, after two nights in a row of sleeping four or more hours, the third night, I’m unable to sleep at all!
Well, now that I have an iPad, I’ve found something to do in the middle of the night, since sleep is such an elusive option. I caption funny animal (and occasionally, human) pictures!
